Department of Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc, the second oldest university in the Czech Republic founded in 1573, originated by the development of a chemical institute that was built as a part of the re-established Olomouc university in 1946.  In 1960, the Department of Chemistry was divided into two sub-departments - the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Methodology and the Department of Organic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry. A new 5 year master study programme, with focus on organic analysis, was opened in 1963. Later changes in the organisation in 1972, led to the establishment of the Department of Analytical and Organic Chemistry and to the independent Department of Analytical Chemistry in 1996.

The Department of Analytical Chemistry is responsible for the university education in the bachelor programme of chemistry, master programmes of analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry, and doctoral programme of analytical chemistry. Its graduates successfully enter professional and managing positions in large industrial companies, smaller private companies, control authorities, health service, and in academe. They secure employment in pharmacys, chemical industries, food industries, car industries, waterwork engineering, the State Veterinary Institute, the Central Institute for Supervising and Testing in Agriculture, clinical-biochemical laboratories, and forensic medicine institutes).

Scientific research is an integral part of the department's activities. Results are published in the most prestigious analytical journals (Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Chromatography A, Electrophoresis, ...). Our students also participate in research. The department holds a successful serie of conferences with international attendance called "Advances in Chromatography and Electrophoresis & Chiranal". The Department of Analytical Chemistry is also licensed to doctorate viva voce examinations (RNDr. degree) and is accredited to oversee the professorial proceedings leading to the academic degrees of associated professor and university professor.

We encourage interest in chemistry among secondary school students by arranging a Chemical Olympics and popular activities.  We further, endeavour to the balanced publics opinion of the field of Chemistry.
